Simple Smash Burgers

As far as burgers go, this is pretty healthy I think. And they taste pretty good.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef. I prefer 80/20 ground beef. Stay away from low-fat ground beef. 90/10 I find is too lean, which makes it dry and bland.

  • Salt

  • Pepper

  • Buns, preferably potato buns

  • Top with sliced onions, lettuce, tomato, pickle slices, American cheese, and condiments of your choosing. Ketchup, mayo, and mustard are safe bets.

Equipment

  • Cast iron pan, griddle, or grill

  • Spatula. I like using a metal fish spatula because it wiggles under the patties pretty well.

Instructions

  1. Grab a handful of ground beef, and smush it flat into a patty shape in your palms. Set the patty on a plate.

  2. Fire up the cooking surface, make sure it’s really hot.

  3. Throw the patty on the cooking surface, and season generously with salt and pepper. Cook for 3-4 minutes, or until a dark crust forms.

  4. Flip, then season again.

  5. After the flip, throw the buns on the cooking surface as well to toast the surface a bit.

  6. If you want cheese, add it shortly before the patties finish cooking so it melts a little.

  7. Transfer onto the buns and serve. Top as desired.
